GOOD FRIDAY

Good Friday, 19th April 2019

Is. 52:13-53:12; Ps. 31(30):2,6,12-13,15-16,17,25; Heb. 4:14-16; 5:7-9; Jn. 18:1-19:42 (Psalter proper)

God’s salvation project began with his Son taking the flesh of a human being born into a Jewish family, a family belonging to those called in the Old Testament “the Poor of Yahweh” — unconditionally faithful to God in all things..  From the moment of his birth, Jesus was with us as Son of God and saviour. For God sent his Son to be with us. At the hour of his death, Jesus, the Son of God, accomplished his mission on earth as he positioned himself, heart and soul, on the side of those who are in tribulation — God’s Poor. He did this by taking on himself the fruits of human sinfulness and died on the Cross.

So today, we pray for the people whom the crucified Jesus remembered to his Father in his final moments: Victims of wars and political expediency, racial hatred, greed and fear. We pray for ourselves, for repentance, for compassion and for justice.

Lord, hear our prayers.
