Daily Word Of God

Matthew 13:54-58

Coming to his home town, Jesus taught the people in their synagogue in such a way that they were astonished and said, ‘Where did the man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? This is the carpenter’s son, surely? Is not his mother the woman called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Jude? His sisters, too, are they not all here with us? So where did the man get it all?’

And they would not accept him. But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is despised only in his own country and in his own house,’ and he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • For many people, Jesus was a great man and they acknowledge that He did many good things and was a man of great wisdom. But they attributed all these to His human qualities. To them there was nothing divine in Jesus.

  • Likewise, “How often do we also not allow the Truth of Jesus’ divinity to penetrate our lives?” Could it be that we have the tendency to perceive Him in our narrow human perceptions?

  • Pray for the graces we need to see and sense Jesus with new eyes and a new heart. Then we will not be caught up by merely seeing Jesus and His deeds and teachings as mundane, but divine.
