Daily Word Of God

Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26

While Jesus was speaking, suddenly one of the officials came up, who bowed low in front of him and said, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and her life will be saved.’ Jesus rose and, with his disciples, followed him.

When Jesus reached the official’s house and saw the flute-players, with the crowd making a commotion, he said, ‘Get out of here; the little girl is not dead; she is asleep.’ And they ridiculed him. But when the people had been turned out he went inside and took her by the hand; and she stood up. And the news of this spread all round the countryside.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Death defines our finite human reality as it is inevitable that we all have to face this truth. However, this Gospel reminds us Christians that death cannot overpower us because we believe that Jesus will raise us to eternal life.

  • This Risen Christ now lives within us and fills our daily lives with great joy regardless of our trials in life.

  • This truth must make a difference in our lives because we see our present life existing beyond this world. Thus, we must try to overcome all worldly ways of living and focus on living in God’s ways that lead us to eternal life.
