Daily Word Of God

Matthew 5:20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a, 37

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘For I tell you, if your uprightness does not surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of Heaven.

‘You have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You shall not kill; and if anyone does kill he must answer for it before the court.

‘You have heard how it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say this to you, if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

‘Again, you have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but must fulfil your oaths to the Lord. But I say this to you, do not swear at all. All you need say is “Yes” if you mean yes, “No” if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the Evil One.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus wants us to not only reconcile our hearts with God but also to reconcile with our enemies. God longs to see unity among His people.

  • Sin can hold us captives and at times we have to struggle and need strength from God to free ourselves. Do I experience such a struggle now?

  • Jesus reminds us not to swear, but simply to state what we mean, either yes or no. As a disciple of Jesus, am I truthful in what I say and do?
