Daily Word Of God

Luke 21:24-28

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Great misery will descend on the land and retribution on this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive to every gentile country; and Jerusalem will be trampled down by the gentiles until their time is complete.

‘There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the turmoil of the ocean and its waves; men fainting away with terror and fear at what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks to us in graphic terms about the end of the world which He says is imminent.  However, Jesus also encourages us and assures us that we have nothing to fear as He will “liberate” us and give us eternal life.

  • Do we fear death and the end of the world?  If we do, then is it because we have not been living our lives as God wills of us or is it because we are too attached to our present earthly lives?

  • How is God challenging us to live our daily lives to the full instead of squandering it in idleness and frivolous activities?  How should your lifestyle change for the better?
