Daily Word Of God

Matthew 6:1, 3-4, 6, 17-18

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Be careful not to parade your uprightness in public to attract attention; otherwise you will lose all reward from your Father in heaven. When you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing; your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

‘And when you pray, go to your private room, shut yourself in, and so pray to your Father who is in that secret place, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

‘But when you fast, put scent on your head and wash your face, so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees all that is done in secret; and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus knows that we all have a human tendency to do good e.g. giving alms etc., though sometimes with impure motives.

  • Our Father in heaven sees every deed, hears every prayer and senses all our motives. We should strive to bring God more fully into our daily living whether we are fasting, giving alms, praying or the like.

  • Such wholesome living will help us deepen our relationship with the Lord through our ongoing growth in sincerity and fidelity to Him.
