Daily Word Of God

Matthew 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them. In truth I tell you, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, is to disappear from the Law until all its purpose is achieved.

‘Therefore, anyone who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be considered the least in the kingdom of Heaven; but the person who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the kingdom of Heaven.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • When we practice our faith, we tend to be selective; to disregard certain aspects as: archaic, too demanding and too moralistic and the like.

  • In today’s Gospel, Jesus assures us that He has not come to abolish the commandments, but instead has come to fulfill them and bring them to a higher spiritual level of perfection and fulfilment.

  • Do we ever challenge ourselves to go beyond what we like and dislike, and try to allow the Wisdom of God and the Church to guide us to the Truth that Jesus preaches?  Pray for the gift of openness and sincerity in the way we love God in our daily living.
