Daily Word Of God

Luke 24:13b-17a,19b-21a,25,27

Two of the disciples were on their way to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking together about all that had happened. And it happened that as they were talking together and discussing it, Jesus himself came up and walked by their side; but their eyes were prevented from recognising him.

He said to them, ‘What are all these things that you are discussing as you walk along?’ They answered, ‘All about Jesus of Nazareth, and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had him crucified. Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free.

Then he said to them, ‘You foolish men! So slow to believe all that the prophets have said!’ Then, starting with Moses and going through all the prophets, he explained to them the passages throughout the scriptures that were about himself.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Why was it difficult for all the disciples to recognize the risen Lord?  They saw the cross as a defeat until the Lord appeared to them and gave them understanding.

  • Thus, they remained downcast and their eyes were similarly blinded.  However, Jesus gently freed them from their emotional turmoil and renewed their trust from their lack of faith.

  • How often do we fail to recognize the Lord when He speaks to our hearts and through people and situations?  The Risen Lord is always trying to give us renewed hope for our daily living.  Do we sense His presence and listen to Him attentively?
