Daily Word Of God

John 6:5-11

Jesus saw the crowds approaching and said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy some bread for these people to eat?’ He said this only to put Philip to the test; he himself knew exactly what he was going to do. Philip answered, ‘Two hundred denarii would not buy enough to give them a little piece each.’

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, ‘Here is a small boy with five barley loaves and two fish; but what is that among so many?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Make the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass there, and as many as five thousand men sat down.

Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; he then did the same with the fish, distributing as much as they wanted.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Today’s Gospel shows clearly how God is always there to provide for our needs. When He gives, He gives in such great abundance that we can never provide for ourselves. Are you aware of how this is happening to you materially and spiritually?

  • God also wants us to share what we have received from him with others as generously as He has given us; especially to those who are in need.

  • Can anything on this earth truly satisfy our deepest longing and spiritual hunger? This shows that ultimately only God, through Jesus our Lord and Saviour and by the power of the Holy Spirit, can satisfy our deepest hunger.
