Daily Word Of God

Matthew 9:36-10:5a, 6-8

When Jesus saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers to his harvest.’

He summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseasees and sickness. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows: ‘Go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. You received without charge, give without charge.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus was saddened by the multitudes that were weary, scattered and lost.  They were like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus wants to save their souls and offer them eternal life.

  • Today millions are also wandering and lost; searching for a deeper meaning in life.  They realize that the glamour of the secular world is transient and does not offer them fulfillment.

  • Thus, millions are spiritually adrift and are hungering to be fulfilled by what  God has to offer them.  Pray that more people will be moved by God to join the religious and priesthood vocation.
