Daily Word Of God

Matthew 16:24-28

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. Anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will anyone gain by winning the whole world and forfeiting his life? Or what can anyone offer in exchange for his life?

‘For the Son of man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his behaviour. In truth I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming with his kingdom.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel, Jesus asserts, “. . . what then will anyone gain by winning the whole world and forfeiting his life?”

  • These words of Jesus can only make sense and will inspire us if we are sincere in our desires of living our faith in God’s Love and Ways.

  • Those of us who rationalise and compromise our faith by finding an “easy way out” would find it helpful to reflect on, “What do you think will happen to us when the ‘riches’ of this materialistic and secular world comes to an end, at our death bed?” Would it be too late to regret on having ignored God’s promptings and squandered His blessings while on earth?
