Daily Word Of God

Matthew 11:20-24

Jesus began to reproach the towns in which most of his miracles had been worked, because they refused to repent.

‘Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Still, I tell you that it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on Judgement Day than for you.

‘And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised as high as heaven? You shall be flung down to hell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet. Still, I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on Judgement Day than for you.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus reproached the communities at Chorazin and Bethsaida because they showed no repentance even after receiving the Good News from Him and witnessing His many miracles.

  • Repentance is conversion and a change of heart. So, in today’s Gospel, Jesus is calling us to His way of truth and freedom, grace and loving-kindness, justice and Holiness.

  • Do we receive Jesus’ Word with faith and obedience or with doubt and indifference? He is offering us the joyful hope of eternal life with God if we repent and change. Thank Jesus for His unconditional love and mercy for all of us.
