Reflection on the WORD

Jesus and Eternal Life – Faith:Jesus proclaimed that He is the “Gate”to Eternal Life. His sheep will never follow a ‘stranger’ because they do not recognise his voice.” Ponder on, “A strong believer has the faith that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Light to Eternal Life. To renounce one’s faith in Jesus is to destroy one’s purpose in life.”

John 10:1-5, 9-10

Jesus said to the Jews: ‘In all truth I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold through the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a bandit. He who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the flock; the gatekeeper lets him in, the sheep hear his voice, one by one he calls his own sheep and leads them out. When he has brought out all those that are his, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow because they know his voice. They will never follow a stranger, but will run away from him because they do not recognise the voice of strangers.’

Jesus spoke to them again: ‘I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe: such a one will go in and out and will find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Jesus calls Himself the “gate” as He stands watch over His people as the Shepherd and Guardian of our souls.
  • Jesus, the good Shepherd, laid down His life for us to assure us of eternal salvation. All He asks of us in return is that we use our worldly goods in mercy and loving service for the needs of others.
  • Do you look to Jesus to receive the strength and courage you need to live and serve as His disciples? Ask Jesus for the compassion and kindness to see Him in those in need.
