Reflection on the WORD

Cross and Resurrection” – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Prophet Simeon prophesied to Mary, “This Child, is destined for the fall and the rise of many . . .” Ponder on, “Through the Suffering and Death of Jesus, He Served His Father’s Mission of Salvation for all peoples. Do we willingly embrace the crosses of living our faith, hope and love for God?”

Luke 2:33-35

As the father and mother of Jesus stood wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘You see this child, he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and a sword will pierce your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel Simeon, a devout man, inspired by the Holy Spirit prophesied that Jesus was to be the light and salvation for the Jews and all mankind.

  • Simeon also prophesied that Mary’s acceptance of God’s Will would become a sword that pierces her heart at Jesus’ crucifixion. However, in spite of her great anguish, she was still able to find the “joy” of being faithful to do God’s Will.
  • Jesus will always give us the strength to bear the pains that come from our anguish of living the Father’s Will. Like Mary we too will also be able to find the “joys” of living in our fidelity to God’s Will.
