Reflection on the WORD

Wholehearted Love for God” – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed a radical Gospel of living in God’s Will and Ways. And, this is to gain Eternal Life, as our ultimate goal. Thus, with the Holy Spirit, we are to rootout all causes of our sins. Ponder on, “Are we willing to put God at the centre of our lives, regardless of the challenges we face?”

Matthew 5:27-32

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have heard how it was said: You shall not commit adultery. But I say this to you, if a man looks at a woman lustfully; he has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye should be your downfall, tear it out and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body thrown into hell. And if your right hand should be your downfall, cut it off and throw it away; for it will do you less harm to lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body go to hell.

‘It has also been said: Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a writ of dismissal. But I say this to you, everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of an illicit marriage, makes her an adulteress; and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Just as a doctor might cut off a limb in order to save the life of the person, so we must be ready to part with anything that causes us to sin and eventually spiritual death.
  • Jesus says that evil desires spring from the heart. So, when we fall into habitual sins, be more fully aware of how our emotions dominate our decisions.
  • Jesus sets high ideals of the married state but whether married or single, He gives grace and power to those who seek to follow His way of holiness. Trust in God and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you to live your life in His way of righteousness and holiness.
