Reflection on the WORD

Light and Salt” – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed that we are each “the salt of the earth and light of the world.” Ponder on, “Jesus emphasizes that like the ‘salt’ and ‘light’, we each have an ultimate purpose in our lives. St Ignatius says, “we are to praise, reverence and serve God, for His Greater Glory. Do we strive to witness this daily?

Matthew 5:13-16

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are salt for the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled under people's feet.

‘You are light for the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in people's sight, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • We, as Christians, have been “enlightened” with “Light of Christ” at our Baptism. A Light that is capable of accomplishing much good in drawing people closer to God in our ordinary daily living.
  • However, so many of us tend to keep this “Light of Christ” hidden, private and very apologetic when we speak of Christ as though we are “imposing” Christ our Risen Lord on others.  Why is this so?
  • Let us pray that we will have the passion, courage and wisdom to witness and speak-up for Christ in situations and to people when opportunities open up for us.
