Reflection on the WORD

Eternal Life – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminded the great crowds who were clamouring for Him;not to look for “earthly bread” and gains, but to believe in Him as the Messiah; so as to receive the gift of Eternal Life.  Ponder on: Do we seek God out ofour love for Him, or do we seek His gifts more than our love for Him?

John 6:23-29

Other boats had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten. When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’

Jesus answered: ‘In all truth I tell you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of man will give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.

Then they said to him, ‘What must we do if we are to carry out God's work?’ Jesus gave them this answer, ‘This is carrying out God's work: you must believe in the one he has sent.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • The crowd was frantically looking for Jesus. Do you seek God only in places of worship or do you see and experience the Risen Christ’s presence within us at all times and in all situations of our lives?
  • When the crowd was clamouring for Jesus, their reasons were not so much to hear the Good News of salvation, but to gain some material and selfish needs.
  • Examine your motives when you serve others, come to church on Sunday, pray and the like.  Pray to the Risen Lord that He will continue to open your minds and hearts more fully to His Kingship and eternal glory.
