Reflection on the WORD

Messiah’s Presence – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed to John the Baptist’s disciples that when the “Messiah is Present” with us, we are to focus our “joys” on Him, and not be distracted by any other rituals and deeds.  Ponder on: Is our faith in Jesus, our Messiah, centered on how to love and serve Himmore sincerely and deeply?

Matthew 9:14-15

Then John's disciples came to him and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’

Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom's attendants cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus reply reminds us that there is a time and place for everything: to recharge or reorient our physical body and to attune ourselves with God during prayer and retreats and the like.
  • In this parable, Jesus was comparing His disciples with the friends of the bridegroom during the celebration. Jesus is the “bridegroom”; He was still with the disciples. Therefore they should celebrate His presence.
  • How are we living our daily lives as disciples of the Lord? Do we continue to live in the darkness of our pain and sorrows or do we “celebrate” because Jesus has come into our lives?
