Reflection on the WORD

Our Lady of Sorrows – Faith: In today’s Gospel, we reflect on how Mary’s deep love and commitment in living the Father’s Will, led her to accept Her Son’s Sufferings and Death, in spite of Her agonising Sorrows.  Ponder on: How have you experienced God’s strength and hope, when you were experiencing deep pain, hurts and sorrows?

John 19:25-27

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

Seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’  Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus says to His beloved disciple, ‘This is your mother’. Jesus didn't entrust His dear mother to just anybody, but to a faithful disciple whom He really loved. ‘And from that hour the disciple took her into his home’.
  • As disciples of Jesus, we too have Mary as our mother.  Mothers are to be loved and honoured for all that they have done for us. How do we relate to Mary in the living of our faith?
  • Let us especially thank the Lord for the gift of His own Mother to us.  May we, like the beloved disciple, joyfully welcome Mary into our hearts and homes?
