Reflection on the WORD

Jesus Washes the Feet of His Apostles: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims that as the Messiah and Master of all peoples, His divine Love is revealed in His unconditional Love and Service; through His Suffering and Death for our Salvation.  Ponder on: How do we witness this “sacrificial love of Jesus” in our daily relationships with others?

John 13:16-20

After he had washed the feet of his disciples, Jesus said to them: ‘In all truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one who sent him.

‘Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly. I am not speaking about all of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must be fulfilled: ‘He who shares my table takes advantage of me.

‘I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe that I am He. In all truth I tell you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus showed His disciples a perfect example of humility when He washed the feet of His disciples, including His betrayer; a task that is reserved for servants and slaves.
  • Jesus loves us unconditionally, just as He loves all His disciples including the one who betrays Him.
  • How do you treat those who have hurt you or have caused you disappointments and pain? Imagine Jesus asking you to wash their feet.  Would you respond to Jesus’ invitation to be humble and forgiving?
