Reflection on the WORD

Good Shepherd: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims, “I am the Good Shepherd . . . who lays down His Life for His sheep. . . I know My own and My own knows Me . . . there are other sheep; not in this fold, and I must lead these too.”  Ponder on: There are no greater blessings and hope than what Jesus has proclaimed.  Pray in deep gratitude to Jesus.

John 10:11-18

Jesus said: ‘I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. The hired man, since he is not the shepherd and the sheep do not belong to him, abandons the sheep as soon as he sees a wolf coming, and runs away, and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep; he runs away because he is only a hired man and has no concern for the sheep.

‘I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep. And there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and I must lead these too. They too will listen to my voice, and there will be only one flock, one shepherd.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Just as Jesus has total Trust and full union with His Father, we too should trust Jesus our Good Shepherd totally as He has promised that He will even “lay down His life for His sheep.”
  • It is a fact of life to experience illness, pain, suffering and many other challenges. However, in the midst of all these pain and suffering we will still find peace, strength and consolation if we entrust our life to Jesus.
  • Most importantly, Jesus will lead us to eternal happiness, if we remain in His “fold” during our lifetime on earth.  Pray for the grace to remain faithful to Him at all times.
