Reflection on the WORD

True Generosity: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed to the Pharisees that true “generosity” is when they invite the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind, as they cannot repay them for their good deeds.  Ponder on: Are our good deeds generous and genuine and out of love for God, and not for our self-glory that looksfor attention and adulation?

Luke 14:12-14

Jesus said to his host, one of the leading Pharisees, ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, brothers, relations or rich neighbours, for fear they repay your courtesy by inviting you in return.  No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; that they cannot pay you back means that you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus in today’s Gospel tells us that when we throw a party in our home, we should invite the crippled, the migrant workers and the poor and the aged.
  • •What is preventing me from taking up Jesus’ challenge?  Is it out of fear, prejudice or the need to keep our homes to ourselves and invite only those who can reciprocate our hospitality?
  • •Jesus tells us that the poor and crippled are also God’s children.  Am I able to accept them as my brothers and sisters too?
