Most Holy Name of Jesus: Monday 3rd January, 2022 January 3, 2022

Reflection on the WORD

“Jesus” – Name: In today’s celebration of the “Holy Name of Jesus” let us remember that in Hebrew, “Jesus” is “Yesua” or “Yehosua” which means “Yahweh saves”.  The Greek translation of the Hebrew “Messiah” is “Christos”.  Both reveal Jesus’ identity as the anointed Saviour of the world.  Let us reverence Jesus in His Name.

Luke 2:21-24

When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.

And when the day came for them to be purified in keeping with the Law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord - observing what stands written in the Law; Every first-born male must be consecrated to the Lord - and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is prescribed in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Both Mary and Joseph obeyed God’s Will through the message of Angel Gabriel and named the infant ‘Jesus’ which means Saviour.
  • •They also obeyed the prescribed Law of Moses and presented their first born child in the Temple in Jerusalem where He is consecrated and “claimed” by the Lord of Life.
  • •How “obedient” are we to the Laws of the Church that prescribes and guides us on how we are to live our Faith and uphold our Morals in our daily living? Do we see the “rules and regulations” of the Church as obligations, impositions or as God’s Will and Wisdom to help us live our life on earth?
