Reflection on the WORD

Faith – Humility and Trust: In today’s Gospel, the Roman centurion with deep faith and humility pleaded with Jesus to cure his servant who is critically ill.  Jesus was greatly impressed, and cured the servant instantly; from a distance. Ponder on, “Is our trust in God strong and humble, or demanding and superficial?”

Matthew 8:5-10, 13

When Jesus went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him.  ‘Sir,’ he said, ‘my servant is lying at home paralysed and in great pain.’  ‘I will come myself and cure him’ said Jesus

The centurion replied, ‘Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and my servant will be cured. For I am under authority myself and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man, “Go,” and he goes; to another, “Come here,” and he comes; to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it.’

When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, ‘I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this.’ And to the centurion Jesus said, ‘Go back, then; you have believed, so let this be done for you.’  And the servant was cured at that moment.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus lavishes praise on the centurion and holds him up as a model of faith. Can Jesus say the same of your faith?
  • •The centurion was appealing to Jesus to help his servant who was sick and paralysed. How often do you beg God to help those who are in great need?  Do you pray only for your loved ones?
  • •Pray that yourself, your loved ones, and the millions who are suffering so much in today’s world.  Every person is precious in God’s eyes, the more your heart reaches out to them, the more Christ-like you will be.
