Reflection on the WORD

Faith – Heaven: In today’s Gospel, Jesus says to His disciples, “Do not store up treasures on earth where moths can destroy, and thieves can steal,  but, store up treasures in heaven.”  Ponder on, “What and who, do I value most as my “treasures” in life?  Do they deepen my relationship with God and prepare me for heaven?

Matthew 6:19-23

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and woodworms destroy them and thieves can break in and steal. But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworms destroy them and thieves cannot break in and steal. For wherever your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

‘The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light. But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be all darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkened, what darkness that will be!

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Our secular world teaches us that happiness is obtained when we have money, power, health and pleasure.
  • •However, we know so well that many people who possess these ‘earthly treasures’ still lack inner peace and happiness.
  • •Jesus reminds us that ‘wherever your treasure is, there will your heart be too’. What is your life centred on? Is God ‘Number 1’ in your life? What changes must you make in order to live in this way?
