St Joseph, Spouse of Mary: Friday 19th March, 2021 March 19, 2021

Reflection on the WORD

St Joseph – Faith: Today’s Gospel episode captures Joseph’s deep spiritual experiences of God’s Will unfolding in a divine mystery that he could not fully comprehend, yet he obeyed with great fidelity.  Do we also discern and embrace God’s Will and trust God fully in spite of the challenges we face?

Matthew 1:16, 18-21

Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Today is the feast of St. Joseph. Most of us know St. Joseph as the village carpenter who married Mary and became the foster father of Jesus.
  • •Joseph was also a prayerful and Godly man who took his vocation very seriously.  He believed that he had been specially chosen by God. Thus, in spite of all the challenges and pain he had to endure Joseph continued to trust in God to lead and guide him.
  • •May we imitate St. Joseph's fidelity and humility in doing God's will in the challenges of our daily living.
