Reflection on the WORD

Jesus’ Presence: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims to John’s disciples that He is the awaited Messiah.  And, we should daily “celebrate the joy of His Presence.”  Do we take God’s blessings of His Mercy, Love and gift of Salvation for granted?  How do we love Jesus and show our gratitude to Him daily?

Matthew 9:14-15

John's disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’

Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom's attendants would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus reply reminds us that there is a time and place for everything: to recharge or reorient our physical body and to attune ourselves with God during prayer and retreats and the like.
  • •In this parable, Jesus was comparing His disciples with the friends of the bridegroom during the celebration. Jesus is the “bridegroom”; He was still with the disciples. Therefore they should celebrate His presence.
  • •How are we living our daily lives as disciples of the Lord? Do we continue to live in the darkness of our pain and sorrows or do we “celebrate” because Jesus has come into our lives?
