Reflection on the WORD

“Testing Jesus”: In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees demanded a sign from Jesus to prove that He is the Messiah.  Do we at times also make similar demands and get upset with Jesus when things do not go our way?  Ponder on, “Do we truly trust and love Jesus or is our faith more in “using” Him for our needs?”

Mark 8:11-13

The Pharisees came up and started a discussion with Jesus; they demanded of him a sign from heaven, to test him.

And with a sigh that came straight from the heart he said, ‘Why does this generation demand a sign?  I tell you solemnly, no sign shall be given to this generation.’ And leaving them again, re-embarked and went away to the opposite shore.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel, we too often ask of God signs to re-assure our faith in Him. As though it is not enough to trust in a loving heavenly Father, we look for more assurances and at times, guarantees.
  • Jesus is the eternal Sign from God; we do not need other signs or guarantees. Through Jesus, we will never be lost and lonely.
  • •Yet, how often have we failed to look to Jesus for our needs and direction in life?  Pray for a deeper faith in the Lord.
