Reflection on the WORD

“Evangelisation”: In today’s Gospel, Jesus urged His disciples to be detached from material comfort and needs so that they can focus on their mission of proclaiming the Gospel more wholeheartedly.  Ponder on, “Are there attachments to comforts, things, people, places that are preventing us from witnessing our faith?”

Luke 10:1-7, 9

The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself would be visiting. And he said to them, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to do his harvesting.

‘Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, “Peace to this house!” And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you.

‘Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, “The kingdom of God is very near to you.”

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •The call to mission is a call and a responsibility of all followers of Christ. It is easy to get side-tracked and forget about this call, but Jesus wants us to be single-minded in the task of mission even if it takes us out of our comfort zone.
  • •God promised that if we are willing to go out and tell people about His love and plan of salvation for everyone, He willgive us the words that enable us to speak for Him.
  • •Are you a passive bystander of your faith? Or do you actively empower others and point others to Jesus? Reflect on this.
