Reflection on the WORD

“Generosity” – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus praises the poor widow who puts into the treasury all that she has to live on; her two coins.  This is in contrast to the rich who gave their loose change.  Ponder on, “Do I share only my ‘leftover money, time and talents’ like the “rich” in the Gospel episode or do I give till it ‘hurts’?”

Luke 21:1-4

Jesus looked up, he saw rich people putting their offerings into the treasury; and he noticed a poverty-stricken widow putting in two small coins, and he said, ‘I tell you truly, this poor widow has put in more than any of them; for these have all put in money they could spare, but she in her poverty has put in all she had to live on.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus taught His disciples that the poor widow gave more than what the rich people gave.  This is true in terms of the proportion of wealth that the poor and rich have.
  • •But, what Jesus is emphasizing here is our need to be generously detached and selflessly concerned for the needs of others.
  • •When we serve the rich we are rewarded with earthly benefits. But, when we attend to the poor and needy God’s sees the compassion of our hearts and will reward us for all eternity.
