Reflection on the WORD

“Blindness” – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus reprimanded the Pharisees for their spiritual blindness of their faith.  They observed the external rituals, but not the spirit of the Law.  Practise true faith reverence, worship and love God through our lives of justice, mercy and selfless sacrifices. How do we live our faith?

Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14

Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came to Jesus and said, ‘Why do your disciples break away from the tradition of the elders? They eat without washing their hands.’

He called the people to him and said, ‘Listen, and understand. What goes into the mouth does not make anyone unclean; it is what comes out of the mouth that makes someone unclean.’

Then the disciples came to him and said, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees were shocked when they heard what you said?’ He replied, ‘Any plant my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. Leave them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind; and if one blind person leads another, both will fall into a pit.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •In today’s Gospel Jesus warns us against hypocrisy, i.e. an outward show of honouring God while the heart harbours evil desires and intentions.
  • •God forgives us and heals us if we admit our faults and sinfulness and seek to be reconciled to Him.
  • Speak to the Lord and ask Him to forgive us of all our wrong-doings and our failure to do the good that we ought, so that we may love and serve Him more wholeheartedly.
