Reflection on the WORD

Challenges of Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims that “New wine is for fresh skins” and not old skins.  This is to call us to be open to the new and radical challenges of the Gospel of Christ.  If the practice of our faith is old and inflexible, then we will lose the divine blessings that God wants to give us.

Matthew 9:14-17

John's disciples came to Jesus and said, ‘Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’

Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom's attendants cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is still with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunken cloth onto an old cloak, because the patch pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, the wine runs out, and the skins are lost. No; they put new wine in fresh skins and both are preserved.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the Word of God will transform our lives if we allow it to fill our minds and hearts like “new wine skin”.
  • •We must die to our sinful habits and rigid ways, like “old wine skin” and live with renewed faith and trust in Jesus who gives us eternal life.
  • •Jesus loves us and wants to share His everlasting joy with us.  He is constantly waiting for us to accept the Truth of His Word more wholeheartedly.  Pray for the grace to be more receptive to Jesus’ invitation.
