Reflection on the WORD

Genealogy of Jesus: In today’s Gospel, the genealogy of Jesus from the line of king David as prophesised, is a divine revelation affirming the Truth of Jesus as the Messiah.  When our faith in Jesus is deep, we would be able to experience Jesus personally.  But, if our faith is weak, we would often have fruitless questioning about the faith.

Matthew 1:1-2a, 6b, 11b, 16-17

Roll of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:

Abraham fathered Isaac ....

David fathered Solomon ....

Then the deportation to Babylon took place.

Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.

The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • God waited 42 generations before He chose to be born into the world. In the fullness of time, God’s Promise to humanity was fulfilled.
  • In these 42 generations, various personalities, some famous, others obscure and still others were public sinners, but each person playing his and her role in the divine Plan.
  • Ponder on the ways you have lived your life so far and ask yourself, “How has God used you to touch the lives of different people and helped them to know the reality of God in their lives?”  What are God’s present challenges to you in His plan of Salvation?
