Reflection on the WORD

God’s Presence: When our hearts are open to the Gospel Truth of Christ, we will be able to sense the Presence of God.  We will know that we are not alone in our needs and that His Love for us is unfailing and His Mercy is unconditional.  When we reject God’s Truth and Love, life will be empty and filled with anxieties.

Matthew 17:10-13

As they came down from the mountain the disciples put this question to Jesus, ‘Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?’

He replied, ‘Elijah is indeed coming, and he will set everything right again; however, I tell you that Elijah has come already and they did not recognise him but treated him as they pleased; and the Son of man will suffer similarly at their hands.’ Then the disciples understood that he was speaking of John the Baptist.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Elijah and John the Baptist shared the same role as the great Prophets; one in ancient times and the other in modern times. They both proclaimed the coming of the Son of God on earth, to save all of humankind.
  • The Kingdom of God is already among us, but we are often distracted and blinded by the attractions of the world that we do not recognize the presence of Jesus’ Spirit in our daily living.
  • How is Jesus challenging us to be more in tune with His presence in our daily living? Do we need to change our attitudes, behaviour and lifestyle?
