Lent Wk 3rd March 27, 2019

Reflection on the WORD

Jesus’ Teachings: In today’s Gospel, Jesus assures His disciples that He has not come to abolish the Laws of Moses, but to fulfil them.  Jesus’ Teachings are to be interpreted in the light of His infinite and unconditional Love and Mercy for every sinner, the poor and needy.  As His disciples we are deeply loved by Jesus.

Mt 5:17-19

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them. In truth I tell you, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, is to disappear from the Law until all its purpose is achieved.

‘Therefore, anyone who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be considered the least in the kingdom of Heaven; but the person who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the kingdom of Heaven.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus came to fulfil the Law, not to abrogate it. The Law must be observed in the mind and heart and not merely in external compliance as practiced by the scribes and Pharisees.
  • •Our observance of Church Laws must be meaningful. Our obedience to the Church’s Laws is meant to help us deepen our relationship with God.
  • •Ponder on whether our penitential acts during this Lent are rooted in our love for God? Do they deepen our relationship with Him? Pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
