Reflection on the WORD

Jesus - Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus’ explanation that the bridegroom’s attendants cannot fast while the bridegroom is still with them.  This reminds us of our need to put Jesus at the centre of our lives.  Pray for the Spirit of wisdom to discern how to love Jesus more fully and be filled with His peace and joy.

Mk 2:18-22

John's disciples and the Pharisees were keeping a fast, when some people came to him and said to him, ‘Why is it that John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?’

Jesus replied, ‘Surely the bridegroom's attendants cannot fast while the bridegroom is still with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the time will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then, on that day, they will fast.

‘No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear gets worse. And nobody puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins too. No! New wine into fresh skins!’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • •Jesus used the example of ‘new and old wineskins’ to warn His disciples about the problem of having a "closed mind" that refuses to accept new truths that come from the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
  • •Are we aware that God gives us His Wisdom, through the inspirations of the Holy Spirit in our daily living?
  • •Ponder on how you were at times suddenly “inspired” by certain ideas that brought much peace, hope and love to you and your family.  Did you not feel that these were divine inspirations?
