Reflection on the WORD

Vigilance: In today’s Gospel, Jesus describes graphically, the signs of great turmoil at the end of the world in the Second Coming of Christ.  These are words of wisdom and caution, not threats, for our Lord is full of compassion.  Ponder on our need to live our faith vigilantly at all times.

Lk 21:25-28,34-36

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the turmoil of the ocean and its waves; men fainting away with terror and fear at what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.

‘And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.’

‘Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened by debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will come upon you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come down on all those living on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to hold your ground before the Son of man.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • During this season of Advent, we remind ourselves that we are brothers and sisters of Jesus whose purpose in life is to live the Father’s Will at all times.
  • As we are preparing for the celebration of Christ’s coming at Christmas, let us reflect on the quality of our daily living and ask ourselves, “Are we spiritually prepared to receive Jesus if He were to come in Glory to meet us today?”
  • Let us seek the help of the Holy Spirit to empower us in times of temptations and to guide us when we are distracted from living the Father’s Will.
