Reflection on the WORD

God’s Power: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed that the “Kingdom of God” is like a mustard seed that grows into a huge tree over time.  Ponder on the Presence and Power of God who lives within your heart.  Your faith like a mustard seed can grow in sanctity through each act of love and mercy for Jesus.

Lk 13:18-21

Jesus said, ‘What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it with? It is like a mustard seed which a man took and threw into his garden: it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air sheltered in its branches.’

Again he said, 'What shall I compare the kingdom of God with? It is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s gospel, Jesus used the imagery of the mustard seed and the yeast to explain the expansion of the Kingdom of God. Jesus used a common weed, the tiny mustard seed, to tell us that God can and will use simple and small things to do the incredible.
  • God can and will use simple things to expand His Kingdom. God uses people's gifts, talents and availability to spread the Good News of the Gospel to others in our daily living.
  • Lord, increase my desire and determination to live and witness Your Good News to more people that they may experience the joy, hope, peace and love that You so freely give to us. Amen
