Reflection on the WORD
“The Harvest is Great” – Faith: Seeing the great crowds; troubled and abandoned, Jesus said, “The harvest is great, but the labourers are few.” Ponder on, “Billions of people are ‘lost’: they have no purpose and direction in their lives; they do not believe in God and Jesus’ Gospel of Eternal Salvation. How is Jesus inviting us to make Him known and loved?”
Matthew 9:36-10:8
At the sight of the crowds, Jesus’ heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant but the labourers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out labourers for his harvest.”
Then he summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus; Simon from Cana, and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.
Jesus sent out these twelve after instructing them thus, “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- When Jesus sees the crowds distressed and in need of healing, He is moved with compassion. He asks His disciples and us to pray for more helpers to serve God’s Kingdom of salvation.
- With the increasing influence of secularism and materialism in our daily living, fewer people are drawn to the priesthood and religious vocation. The Church is in a crisis of such vocations.
-
Let us pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life and also for greater witness of the Good News of Salvation by lay people so that more people will be drawn closer to God.
