Reflection on the WORD

God’s Will – Faith”: In today’s Gospel, Martha was preoccupied with her hospitality of serving Jesus. However, Mary sat andlistenedto Him. Jesus praised Mary for having chosen the “better” option. Ponder on, “Are we busy with doing many things, except doing God’s Will? Doing good things alone; may not necessarily help us grow in God’s wisdom and holiness.”

Luke 10:38-42

Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.

Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’

But the Lord answered, ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said, ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to be taken from her.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • While Jesus commented that Martha was “distracted,” He did not condemn her for the warm hospitality.  However, she was too caught up and stressed out by what she was doing to be hospitable.
  • Likewise, do we find ourselves drawn into such “distractions” in life?  There is the “better part in life” which is to listen to what God wants to tell us. What He wants us to do for Him, and How He wants us to serve Him.
  • We are each challenged to be “filled” with God’s Word in our life.  We need to create more “space and silence” in our daily living.  It is during such moments of solitude that God’s Word can penetrate our hearts.
