Reflection on the WORD

Our Commitment to God”: In today’s Gospel, the “Parable of the Sower” describes how some seeds fell on “the edge of the path, others on patches of rock, or among thorns, and still others on rich soil”. Ponder on, “How deep is our faith, hope and love for God? Do temptations weaken our commitment, or do we overcome them, and live a fruitful and Christ-centred life?”

Matthew 13:1-9

Jesus left the house and sat by the lakeside, but such large crowds gathered round him that he got into a boat and sat there. The people all stood on the shore, and he told them many things in parables.

He said, ‘Listen, a sower went out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up at once, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

‘Anyone who has ears should listen!'

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus’ parable today speaks about a sower, seeds and soil.
  • The sower casted his seeds widely. The result was that his seeds were received on different types of soil.  The same applies to the Word of God that is proclaimed to peoples all over the world.
  • Are we receptive to the Word of God? Are we ready to help different people produce a richer harvest through the witnessing of our faith?
