Reflection on the WORD

Earthly and Heavenly Home” – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed to His disciples that as a woman in childbirth suffers, her sufferings will turn into joy at the birth of her child. Ponder on, “Likewise, face the painful challenges of the commitment to follow Jesus with fidelity, sacrifice, service and forgiving love; we will then rejoice in our Eternal Heavenly Home.

John 16:20-23a

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I tell you most solemnly, you will be weeping and wailing while the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.

‘A woman in childbirth suffers, because her time has come; but when she has given birth to the child she forgets the suffering in her joy that a man has been born into the world. So it is with you: you are sad now, but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy, and that joy no one shall take from you. When that day comes, you will not ask me any questions.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • How does my heart respond to Jesus’ promise that all our sorrows in this world will be turned to joy?  What about the pain and suffering in the world?  Ponder on this truth.
  • Have I been the source of comfort and hope to people who are suffering and lost by the complexities of life?
  • How can I express my gratitude to God creatively in the way I live my daily life or when I face difficult challenges?
