Reflection on the WORD

Views about Jesus” – Faith: In today’s Gospel, the crowds and guards had different views of who Jesus was, and no one arrested Him. Ponder on, “We all have faith in Jesus, as our Lord and Messiah. However, we fall into the sin of omission to witness to who Jesus is; in our daily living. Are people not inspired to believe in Jesus, because of our poor witness?

John 7:40-47

Some of the crowd who had been listening to Jesus said, ‘He is indeed the prophet,’ and some said, ‘He is the Christ,’ but others said, ‘Would the Christ come from Galilee? Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, the village where David was?’

So the people could not agree about him. Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actually laid a hand on him. The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, ‘Why haven't you brought him?’ The guards replied, ‘No one has ever spoken like this man.’ ‘So,’ the Pharisees answered, ‘you, too, have been led astray?’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • The crowd was arguing about who Jesus really is because they were confused and divided in their hearts.  They were not genuinely seeking the Truth and desiring for it.
  • The Pharisees on the other hand were too insecure and rigid to break free from their prejudices to see that Jesus is their Messiah.
  • If we genuinely seek Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, then we must pray to have the courage to entrust our whole lives, both our present and our future in God’s Providence, regardless of what we are going through in our lives.
