Reflection on the WORD

Jesus’ Suffering and Death – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed to His disciples, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the power of men.” Ponder on: In God’s mystery of His infinite Power He created everything. In His Divine Mercy, He also reveals that He Willingly Suffered and Died for our Salvation. This Truth is humanly incomprehensible.

Luke 9:43b-45

At a time when everyone was full of admiration for all he did, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘For your part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the power of men.’

But they did not understand what he said this; it was hidden from them so that they should not see the meaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about what he had just said.

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • The crowd was filled with admiration over Jesus’ miraculous cure of the epileptic man possessed by evil spirits. Then Jesus shocked His disciples by predicting His own death.
  • The disciples were filled with awe at the miracle, yet “confused” by Jesus’ predictions of His death.  Meanwhile, they kept all these in their hearts and “did not dare to ask” Jesus to clarify what He meant.
  • Do our faith experiences put us in dilemmas because we don’t fully understand Jesus’ and the Church’s Teachings especially on faith and moral issues? Trust in God’s Wisdom and continue to love God and the Church in mature ways.
