Reflection on the WORD

Hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus condemned the scribes and Pharisees for their evil deeds. He says, “You look handsome on the outside, but inside, you are full of every kind of corruption.” Ponder on: Do we trust ‘hypocrites’ in relationships? Do we pray and witness God’s Love and Justice to them?

Matthew 23:27-32

Jesus said: ‘Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look handsome on the outside, but inside are full of   dead men’s bones and every kind of corruption. In the same way, you appear to people from the outside like good and honest men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

‘Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You who build the sepulchres of the prophets and decorate the tombs of holy men saying, “We would never have joined in shedding the blood of the prophets, had we lived in our fathers’ day.” So! Your own evidence tells against you! You are the sons of those who murdered the prophets! Very well then, finish off the work that your fathers began.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In today’s Gospel, Jesus exposed the Pharisees. Externally, they showed great interests and rigidity in following the Law, but deep within, their hearts and minds were filled with self-righteousness.
  • Jesus highlighted their hypocrisy by urging them to go ahead and complete the murdering of the prophets.

  • Pray that we may practice what we preach and live a virtuous life with a clear conscience.
