Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time, Lay Apostolate Sunday August 25, 2024
Reflection on the WORD
Peter’s Deep Faith: In today’s Gospel, many disciples left Jesus. So, Jesus asked the apostles, “Do you want to go away too?” Peter proclaimed with great commitment and courage, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of Eternal Life.” Ponder on: What are our main obstacles and temptations in our faith? How can our faith grow more fully and deeply?
John 6:64-69
Jesus said to his followers: ‘There are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus knew from the outset who did not believe and who was to betray him. He went on, ‘This is why I told you that no one could come to me except by the gift of the Father.’
After this, many of his disciples went away and accompanied him no more. Then Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘What about you, do you want to go away too?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word
As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?
- In truth, we are all called to believe in God. God’s gift of faith and belief is freely given to us. Unfortunately we don’t realize it and far too often walk away from it.
- This is because God has given us the gift of free will and our human tendency is to allow the secular and material world’s attraction to distract and draw us away from God’s gift of salvation.
- We need to follow the example of the Twelve Apostles. We need to have their faith and dedication to keep our life’s focus on God, and to follow Him through whatever befalls us.
