Reflection on the WORD

Worries – Life – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims to His disciples, “Do not worry about your life. . . look at the birds in the sky. . .”  Ponder on,: Our faith in Jesus will grow more deeply if, we are more attentive to the challenges of our ‘insecurities, greed, glory and gratifications.”  This is because they often confuse our emotions and blur our thinking, when we desire to choose God’s Will.

Matthew 6:24-26, 30, 33

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or be attached to the first and despise the second. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.

‘That is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and what you are to wear. Surely life is more than food, and the body more than clothing! Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are? Now if that is how God clothes the wild flowers growing in the field which are there today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more look after you, you who have so little faith?

‘Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on God's saving justice, and all these other things will be given you as well.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus warns against the love of money, possessions, the power of position, the glamour or wealth and prestige, the driving force of unruly passions and addictions. These can govern our thoughts, shape our ideals and control our appetites and desires in life.
  • Anxiety robs us of faith and confidence in God’s help. Jesus wants us to put away our anxiety and preoccupation with material things and instead seek first the things of God - His kingdom and His righteousness.
  • God knows our needs even before we ask and He gives generously to those who trust in Him. Who is the ‘Master’ of your life?
