Reflection on the WORD

Protection from the Evil One – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus prayed to His Father to protect His disciples from the “Evil One” that they may not be lost.”  Ponder on: To be a faithful disciple of Jesus, we will face many challenges of the evil spirits of Satan and other great temptations that will try to deceive us. Pray for the wisdom to remain faithful to Jesus at all times.

John 17:11b-15

Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said: ‘Holy Father, keep those you have given me true to your name, so that they may be one like us. While I was with them, I kept those you had given me true to your name. I have watched over them and not one is lost except one who was destined to be lost, and this was to fulfil the scriptures.

‘But now I am coming to you and I say these things in the world to share my joy with them to the full. I passed your word on to them, and the world hated them, because they belong to the world no more than I belong to the world. I am not asking you to remove them from the world, but to protect them from the Evil One.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • In life, so long as we are willing to follow Jesus, He will definitely keep us true to ‘God’s name.’
  • When we do God’s work, we will often be despised and even face humiliation and scorn.
  • However, Jesus is faithful to all those who brave such experiences and He will always look after us. This is evident when He said ‘not one of them is lost.’
