Reflection on the WORD

God’s Reward:  In today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaimed to the Pharisees that when they “throw a party, invite those who are not able to repayus, like the poor, crippled, blind . . .  This is so that God can see our pure intentions, and “reward us for them.”  Ponder on: Do we do good to others, so that we can benefit from them or are they done out of our love for God?

Luke 14:12-14

Jesus said to his host, one of the leading Pharisees, ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relations or rich neighbours, in case they invite you back and so repay you. No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; then you will be blessed, for they have no means to repay you and so you will be repaid when the upright rise again.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus in today’s Gospel tells us that when we throw a party in our home, we should invite the crippled, the migrant workers and the poor and the aged.
  • What is preventing me from taking up Jesus’ challenge?  Is it out of fear, prejudice or the need to keep our homes to ourselves and invite only those who can reciprocate our hospitality?
  • Jesus tells us that the poor and crippled are also God’s children.  Am I able to accept them as my brothers and sisters too?
