Reflection on the WORD

Judgement – Faith: In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds His disciples, “Take the plank out of your own eye first; only then do you take the splinter out of your brother’s eye.”  Ponder on: We have a tendency to judge others unjustly, even without knowing the full facts.  Pray for the humility to be more compassionate like Jesus, and admit to our own imperfections and sins.

Matthew 7:1-5

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not judge, and you will not be judged; because the judgements you give are the judgements you will get, and the standard you use will be the standard used for you.

‘Why do you observe the splinter in your brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own? And how dare you say to your brother, “Let me take that splinter out of your eye,” when, look, there is a great log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to take the splinter out of your brother's eye.’

Today's Pointers on God's Word

As you read the passage what words, phases or meanings caught your attention?

  • Jesus warns us ‘Do not judge and you will not be judged’.  He wants us to show kindliness in judgment instead of being judgmental and uncharitable towards others.
  • Often we do not have all the facts and the ‘full story’ of a case or we could be prejudiced. It is easy to misjudge others and difficult to be impartial in judgment.  It is easier to find fault in others than in oneself.
  • To find fault in oneself requires humility and self-control. Ask the Lord to fill your heart with charity, tolerance and patience towards others.
